Lines for Leah McPhillips

In Norwich labs where cultures bloom,

Where Streptomyces shake off gloom,

She walks the lanes of DNA,

Untangling secrets hid away.

SCP1, a linear thread

A plasmid ancient, rarely read

She maps its twists, its telomere grace,

A strange-sized wanderer finding its place.

Through ParB’s dance of faithful dividing,

She watches chromosomes, steadily gliding;

A segregation waltz, precise and bright,

Ensuring each daughter inherits the light.

Yet in her work, an echo rings

Of western winds and Celtic springs;

An Irish root that threads her core,

Soft moss, loud sea, a mythic lore.

So science sings through cultures spun,

From Donegal rain to East Anglian sun

Leah’s craft: to seek, reveal,

To show what hidden genes conceal.

A plasmid’s tale, a protein’s role,

An island spirit guiding the whole.
